‘WHO call on emergency nod for Covaxin in September’ - Times of India
GENEVA: A WHO official said the body’s assessment of Covaxin in India is at an advanced stage and an emergency approval decision for the Bharat Biotech vaccine is likely by mid-September. Covaxin has not yet been approved by Western authorities.
A top vaccine official at the World Health Organization says the agency expects to decide next month on an emergency permit for the Indian vaccine Covid-19 made by Bharat Biotech, a shot not yet approved by any Western regulator.
Dr Mariangela Simao, assistant director general of the WHO for vaccines, said the UN health service’s assessment of the Bharat Biotech vaccine was “quite advanced” and officials were hoping for a decision by mid-September.
Simao says the WHO is also considering other vaccine versions already licensed by the agency, including one made by Sinopharm. He expects to begin evaluating vaccines developed by Sanofi Pasteur and Novavax in September. “There are many, many vaccines in the final stages of the pipeline,” says Simao.
Last week, US manufacturers Novavax said they would prioritize developing licenses in developing countries and from the WHO before getting the green light in the US and the European Union.
