WHO: 4 million new coronavirus cases reported globally - Times of India
GENEVA: There have been more than 4 million new cases of Covid-19 worldwide in the last week, mainly due to peaks in the Middle East and Asia.
This emerges from the World Health Organization’s latest weekly pandemic report.
The United Nations Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that infections had been rising for more than a month, although the number of deaths worldwide had fallen by about 8%.
In the Middle East and Asia, however, deaths rose by more than a third. Last week, the highest number of coronavirus cases were reported from the United States, India, Indonesia, Brazil and Iran. More than 130 countries have now reported cases of easier spread of the delta variant, first identified in India.
After nearly a month of rising cases, the WHO said the European region reported a 9% drop in Covid-19 cases, citing falling case loads in Britain and Spain. Last month, the UK eased almost all remaining Covid-19 restrictions amid strong criticism, the move would lead to another deadly wave of infections. Almost 60% of the British population is fully immunized against the disease.
