Washington: Top US and Pakistani defense officials discussed the current situation in Afghanistan as well as regional security during a telephone conversation, the Pentagon said in a statement Monday.
The call comes amid a meeting between the extensive troika of Russia, China and the United States, along with Pakistan, on an Afghan settlement.
“Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke by telephone with Pakistani Army Chief of Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa to discuss our mutual goals for security and stability in the region,” said Defense Department spokesman John Kirby.
“Secretary Austin and General Baigua discussed the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, regional security and stability, and bilateral defense relations in general,” the statement added.
Several human rights groups have reported serious human rights violations and war crimes in the Taliban. At least 27 children have been killed and 136 injured in the past 72 hours as violence escalates in Afghanistan, UNICEF said on Monday.
The United Nations says it is “shocked by the rapid escalation of child rights abuses” in Afghanistan.
Inin and Baiva last discussed US withdrawal from Afghanistan in April.
