Testing 3 drugs for use against coronavirus: WHO - Times of India
GENEVA: The World Health Organization says it will soon test three drugs used for other diseases to see if they could help patients with coronavirus.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the UN health service said the three drugs would be adopted in the next phase of ongoing global research to identify possible treatments for Covid-19. The drugs were selected by an independent committee based on their ability to prevent deaths in people being treated for coronavirus.
These include artesunate, a malaria drug, the cancer drug imatinib, and infliximab, which are currently used in people with immune system diseases.
The current WHO study on Covid-19 therapies previously evaluated four drugs. Among its findings, the agency found that remedisivir and hydroxychloroquine did not help people being treated for the virus. The WHO survey involved thousands of researchers in hundreds of hospitals in 52 countries.
“Finding more effective and affordable treatments for patients with Covid-19 remains a critical need,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
