Moscow: Russian warplanes bombed enemy ships in the Black Sea during training exercises, Russia said on Saturday amid friction with the West over NATO exercises in the region and a recent incident with a British warship.
Moscow last week challenged the HMS defender’s right to cross the waters near Crimea, something London said it had every right to do. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, but most of the world still recognizes it as part of Ukraine.
Russia said the ship had entered its territorial waters illegally and accused London of “provocation”. Moscow said it could bomb British naval vessels if there were more such actions by the British navy off Crimea.
On Saturday, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet said warplanes from its air force and those from the southern military district had participated in training.
“Aircraft crews conducted training flights over the Black Sea, conducting missiles and bombing against simulated enemy ships,” the RIA news agency reported.
The exercises included aircraft including Sukhoi Su-30SM multi-role fighters, Sukhoi Su-24M bombers, Sukhoi Su-34 fighters and Sukhoi Su-27 fighters, the report said.
The exercise takes place as NATO, Ukraine and their allies conduct large-scale exercises in the sea breeze in the region.
The two-week exercise will involve about 5,000 troops from NATO and other allies, and about 30 ships and 40 aircraft, including USS Ross missiles and the US Navy.
Moscow has demanded the cancellation of the exercise, and the Russian Defense Ministry has said it will respond to national security if necessary.
