MULTAN: Pakistan’s foreign minister said Sunday that violence and lawlessness could reign in Afghanistan following the US withdrawal and that Pakistan would close its borders to the country if the Taliban took control.
Shahmud Kumit Krisi said Pakistan has already accepted 3.5 million Afghan refugees over the years, but will not accept them again. He spoke at a weekly media briefing in the central city of Mulhad.
“We can not take any more, we must close our borders, we must safeguard our national interest,” he said, adding that Pakistan would continue its diplomatic efforts for peace in the country and welcome its democratically elected leadership.

The Taliban ruled Afghanistan until they were ousted by a US-led coalition following the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
In recent weeks, Taliban fighters have crossed into several areas in southern and northern Afghanistan, persuading government security forces to surrender and seize their weapons and military vehicles.
