SANTA BARBARA: The second baby for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is officially here: Meghan gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Friday.
A spokesman for Prince Harry and Megan said Sunday that the couple welcomed their child Lilibet “Lily” Diana Mudabten-Windsor. Their daughter weighed 7 kilos, 11 ounces.
Her first name, Lilibet, is a nod to the Queen’s nickname. Her middle name is in honor of her grandmother and Harry’s mother. The baby is the eighth in a row on the British throne.
No photos of the newborn or the Sussexes accompanied the announcement.
The birth comes after Harry and Megan’s explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey in March. The couple described painful discussions about the skin color of their first child, losing the royal protection and the intense pressure that led her to consider suicide.
Buckingham Palace said the couple’s allegations of racism were “worrying”. The royal family said the issue would be addressed privately.
Winfrey and Harry recently collaborated on Mental Illness on the Apple TV + Mental Health series “The Me You Can’t See”.
Harry and American actress Meghan Markle were married at Windsor Castle in May 2018. Their son Archie was born a year later.
In early 2020, Meghan and Harry announced that they were stepping down and moving to North America, saying what they said was intolerable invasions and racist attitudes in the British media. They live in Montecito, a luxury area that recently bought a home in Santa Barbara, California.
Last year, Meghan revealed she had a miscarriage in July 2020, giving a personal account of the traumatic experience hoping to help others.
Months before his dismissal, Harry said the royal family cut him off financially in early 2020 after announcing plans to step down from his roles. But he was able to provide security for his family because of the money left by his mother, Princess Diana.
In an interview with Winfrey, Meghan said she was worried her son did not have a royal title because it meant he would not be secured. She said that digestion of all during pregnancy was “very difficult”. More than the title “prince”, she was more concerned about the safety and protection of her son.
Meghan said it was difficult for her to understand why there were concerns within the royal family about her son’s skin color. He said it was difficult to “separate” these talks.
Harry also said there are lasting implications for Meghan’s treatment and his relationship with his family.
The departure of Harry and Megan from royal office began in March 2020 for what they described as invasions and racist attitudes of the British media towards the Duchess.
