Iran's daily Covid deaths top 600 in new high - Times of India
TEHRAN: Iran on Sunday reported more than 600 deaths from Covid daily for the first time, amid stricter restrictions on limiting the spread of the virus.
The country also recorded 36,736 new infections in 24 hours, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 4,425,821, the health ministry said.
The last 620 deaths increased the total death toll to 97,828, he added.
Health officials have acknowledged that official figures underestimate the country’s real record. The Islamic Republic is struggling to contain what officials call the “fifth wave” of the virus driven by the highly contagious Delta variant.
The numbers have broken daily records several times this month.
Authorities have ordered government offices, banks and non-core businesses to close across the country from Monday until the end of next Saturday.
The ban on driving between provinces began on Sunday and is expected to take effect until August 27.
Iran has avoided imposing a complete blockade on its population of 83 million, instead resorting to piecemeal measures such as temporary travel bans and business closures.
Authorities have sought to speed up the country’s vaccination campaign amid criticism that it started too late and as Iran’s depleted health system struggles to cope with rising Covid cases.
Drowned out by US sanctions that have made it difficult to transfer money abroad, Iran says it has had difficulty importing vaccines.
More than 15 million people received the first dose of the vaccine, but only about 4 million had the second piercing, the health ministry said on Sunday.
In addition to China’s Sinopharm, Iran is administering Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, India’s Covaxin and AstraZeneca, according to the health ministry. Authorities have also approved the urgent use of two locally produced vaccines, but the only mass-produced one, COVIran Barekat, is in short supply.
