India completed England for 183 with an impressive bowling stitch demonstration to take command after the first day of the test start on Wednesday.

Joe Root made 64, but his decision to make bats was reversed as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami destroyed the hosts by sharing seven wickets with each other.

India climbed to 21 without a loss in response, overcoming the last 13 overs without any damage to end an extremely satisfying day.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul both hit nine and looked comfortable against the ball on Trent Bridge.

The first match of the series of five tests also marks the beginning of the new round of the World Test Championship.

Earlier, England, who looked steady at 138-3 before the tea break, lost their last seven wickets for 45 runs and four of their winners had ducks against their name.

After Root was selected as a bat, Bumrah (4-46) gave India a perfect start by firing Rory Burns lbw for a duck in the first over.

Jacques Crawley drove and pulled with confidence and looked good before falling on Mohamed Shiraz in a full of adventures after making 27.

India captain Virat Koli had fired a critique at that Shiraz and was reluctant to go for a second, but footballer Rishab Padt was adamant.

Collie stepped back and reiterated that Crawley had indeed begged Shiraz to lose back.

Sami (3-28) had crouched unluckily in the morning session, but struck shortly after lunch, dragging Dom Sibley to throw him in the nearby maternity ward, where Rahul had been placed for just that kind of dismissal.

Ruth hit Shiraz for three consecutive goals and disappointed the Indians with his risk-free concentration.

Jonny Bairstow also looked well set up until Shami trapped him lbw for 29 and the wheels soon fell off England discounts.

Ruth looked largely undisturbed, but Shardul Thakur trapped the head of the lbw house, ending a good shot that included 11 boundaries.

Sam Kuran turned 27 not before Boumra returned to polish their tails.

England chose a seam attack only, while India withdrew from Ravichandran Ashwin, with Ravindra Jadeja being the only rotation option.
