Imran Khan nominates Abdul Qayyum Niazi as next premier of PoK - Times of India
Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday nominated his party MP Abdul Qayyum Niazi as the next prime minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after extensive consultations.
Niazi won the recent election for the Abbaspur-Poonch Legislative Assembly.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party secured 32 seats in the 53-member House. This is the first time the PTI has formed a government in PoK.
India has rejected the recent PoK election, saying the “cosmetic exercise” was just an attempt by Pakistan to “camouflage its illegal occupation” and that it had strongly protested.
Reacting strongly to the PoK elections, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said Pakistan “has no place in these Indian territories” and must evacuate all Indian territories under its occupation.
“The so-called elections in the Indian-occupied territory of Pakistan are just an attempt by Pakistan to camouflage its illegal occupation and the material changes it is making in these territories,” he said last week.
“Such an exercise can neither hide the illegal occupation by Pakistan nor the serious violations of human rights, exploitation and denial of freedom to the people in these occupied territories,” he said.
Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chadri wrote on Twitter that Prime Minister Khan had chosen Niazi to lead the PTI government in Poland after extensive consultations.
“After a long deliberation and review of proposals, the Prime Minister of Pakistan and PTI President Imran Khan has nominated the newly elected MP Abdul Qayyum Niazi for the post of Prime Minister,” he wrote.
The minister also described Qayyum as “a dynamic and genuine political activist, dedicated to his people.”
Khan had interviewed several elected members on Friday and Saturday, including Sardar Tanvir Ilias, Lawyer Sultan Mahmoud, Havatza Farouk, Azar Sadiq and Niazi.
He reportedly asked them about strategy and views on the environment, tourism and national and international issues.
The majority of experts said that lylias and Sultan Mahmoud were the top candidates and most of them agreed that lylias was the favorite. But Niazi turned out to be a dark horse to take the top spot, although he was hardly noticed.
Niazi was a member of the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference before leaving it to join the PTI two years ago. He was also elected from the platform of the Muslim Conference in 2006 and has also served as Minister of Food.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have 12 and 7 seats, respectively, in Parliament. Both the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Congress and the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Party won one seat each.
Ruling party candidates Anwarul Haq and Riaz Gujjar have been elected president and vice president respectively.
