NAIROBI: The Ethiopian government says it has “accepted positively” a call for an immediate, unilateral ceasefire in the Tigray region after nearly eight months of deadly conflict and as hundreds of thousands of people face the worst hunger crisis in a decade.
The state media statement came shortly after the federal government-appointed interim administration of Tigray left the regional capital, Mekele, and called for a humanitarian ceasefire so that desperate help could be provided.
Ethiopia says the ceasefire will last until the end of the critical planting season in Tigray. The end of the season is coming in September.
“The government has a responsibility to find a political solution to the problem,” said caretaker Prime Minister Abraham Belay, adding that some elements of the former Tigris ruling party were willing to work with the federal government.
The area has seen some of the fiercest fighting in recent days, with some residents of Meckele applauding the arrival of Tigray forces.
Thousands have been killed in the conflict as Ethiopia and allied forces pursue former Tiger leaders and their supporters, as well as humanitarian groups calling for more access to the region of 6 million people. International pressure in Ethiopia escalated again last week after a military airstrike on a busy market in Tigray killed more than 60 people.
