Dramatic drop in Covid deaths but US must stay vigilant about Delta variant: Joe Biden - Times of India
WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden has said that although the United States has seen a dramatic drop in the number of Covid-19 deaths due to its vaccination program, people need to be vigilant about the most contagious Delta variant spreading rapidly in the country.
Stressing the need for people to be vaccinated, he said “almost all” of the Covid deaths and hospitalizations in the country are unvaccinated.
The highly contagious Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, was first identified in India in December and is spreading rapidly around the world. In some parts of the Americas, the Delta strain accounts for more than 80 percent of new infections, including some Midwestern states such as Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.
Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said new Delta-infected Covid infections accounted for 51.7% of infections in the United States.
Speaking at the second cabinet meeting on the completion of six months of his administration on Tuesday, Biden said that overall, Kovic-19’s deaths have dropped dramatically. And in the last six months, they have dropped by about 90% due to the vaccination program.
“But we need to be vigilant, especially with the Delta variant out there. As Covid-19 cases increase, almost all Covid deaths and illnesses come from unvaccinated people. Let me say it again: almost all come from unvaccinated people, “he said.
He said the safest thing for humans is to get vaccinated. “That is why we are focusing, in our next phase, on vaccinating the unvaccinated,” he added.
The White House has stepped up its efforts to combat vaccine misinformation, especially on social media, and is taking a more targeted approach to communities across the country, including young people.
Experts believe the Delta variant could be the most dominant in the country in the coming weeks.
Local health officials say there is growing concern about the growing number of adults and children being infected with the Delta variant.
The average number of new cases of Covid-19 each day last week was 32,278, a jump of 66% from the average daily rate of the previous week, and 145% higher than it was two weeks ago, CNN reported.
If the most contagious Delta variant of the disease continues to spread to the United States, especially in unvaccinated populations, or if a vaccine-resistant variant emerges, much of the country’s progress could be reversed, experts have warned.
The United States is still the world most affected by the deadly pandemic. The country has recorded more than 34,174,700 confirmed cases and reported more than 609,500 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University tracker Covid-19.
Biden further said that the US is not only vaccinating, but will also help the world.
“We will help vaccinate the world. We are building better back to create jobs and grow the middle class not only at home, (but) everywhere. It is in our interest to develop the economies of these other nations,” he said.
As for the US economy, the largest in the world, Biden said it was making historic progress.
“The American people overwhelmingly support our plans – this is the support that many of our friends and the other group are losing. Poll data show that they strongly support our infrastructure effort,” he said.
Biden said his presidency is taking steps to restore American leadership in the world.
For the past four years, he said, the United States has been “behind the eight balls.”
“We have lost much of our position. I do not need to say this to my friend sitting to my right – the Foreign Minister. He understands that well,” he added.
Biden said the United States is currently in a crucial competition for the second quarter of the 21st century with China and many other nations.
“Many of these nations believe that authoritarianism is the future, that democracies can not compete with authoritarianism because it is so difficult. Things are moving so fast, technologically and otherwise, that democracies can not take enough action together to “to get consensus on how to proceed,” he said.
