Donald Trump reportedly said Hitler 'did a lot of good things'; New book | World News - Times of India
WASHINGTON: Donald Trump, during a visit to Europe, while the US president, told his chief of staff that “Hitler did many good things,” The Guardian reported on Wednesday, citing an upcoming book.
The then head of Trump, John Kelly, is said to be “surprised” by the observation.
The exchange refers to the forthcoming book, “Honestly, we won this election,” by Michael Bender of The Wall Street Journal, the British newspaper reported.
The Guardian said it had received a copy of the book before it was published next week.
Trump reportedly made the comment while Kelly gave the President a makeshift history lesson during a 2018 visit to Europe to mark the end of World War I.
According to the book, Kelly “reminded the president of which countries were on the sidelines during the conflict” and “linked points from World War I to World War II and all of Hitler’s atrocities.”
“Well, Hitler did a lot of good things,” Trump said.
Kelly reportedly “told the president he was wrong, but Trump was unspecified,” highlighting the German economic recovery under Hitler in the 1930s.
“Kelly pushed back,” Binder said, “and argued that the German people would be poorer than they were subjected to the Nazi genocide.”
Kelly told Trump that even if his claim about the German economy under the Nazis was true, “you can never say anything to support Adolf Hitler. You just can’t.”
The Guardian said Bender had been interviewing Trump since he lost the November 2020 election and the former president refused to comment on Hitler.
Kelly, a former Navy general who left the White House in early 2019, has made many critical remarks about Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of the former president.
