Coronavirus origins: China rejects WHO demand for further probe - Times of India
Beijing: China on Friday rejected calls from the World Health Organization for a resumption of research into the origin of Covid-19, saying it supported “scientific” rather than “political” efforts to find out how the virus started.
Pressure is mounting once again in Beijing to consider a new investigation into the roots of a pandemic that has killed more than four million people and paralyzed economies worldwide since it first appeared in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.
A group of WHO international experts went to Wuhan in January 2021 to write a first phase report, which was written in collaboration with their Chinese counterparts. He failed to find a definitive position on how the virus started.
On Thursday, the WHO urged China to share raw data from the first Covid-19 cases to revive its investigation into the disease.
China reacted by reiterating its position that the initial investigation was sufficient and that calls for further data were motivated by policy rather than scientific inquiry.
“We are opposed to the political identification … and the abandonment of the joint report,” issued following a visit by a group of WHO experts to Wuhan in January, Undersecretary of State Ma Zaoxou told reporters. “We support scientific identification.”
The report said the virus, which was transmitted from bats to humans through an intermediate animal, was the most likely scenario, and a leak from Wuhan virology laboratories was “extremely unlikely.”
Ma rejected proposals for new lines of inquiry.
“The conclusions and recommendations of the WHO-China joint report were recognized by the international community and the scientific community,” he said.
“Future global traceability work should and can only be carried out further on the basis of this report, rather than launching a new one.”
