California urges people to flee communities in Dixie fire path - Times of India
SAN FRANCISCO: Officials in northern California on Wednesday warned residents of two communities along the path of the raging Dixie fire to leave immediately as strong winds blew the flames forward.
Authorities issued warnings to residents still in the Greenville and Chester communities as winds of up to 35 miles per hour ignited the Dixie fire, the state’s largest wildfire, which has become so large that it creates its own weather system.
The Plumas Country Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order late Tuesday for about 2,000 Chester residents to leave the area.
“If you stay you should go to the EAST, IMMEDIATELY!” the sheriff’s department announced on Twitter on Wednesday.
“If you can not evacuate and are threatened by fire and can get there safely, take refuge at the Chester High School baseball field!”
“If you are still in the Greenville area, you are in immediate danger and you MUST leave now !!”, the department said in a second warning on social media.
“If you stay, emergency correspondents may not be able to help you.”
The Dixie fire has been raging in the forests of northern California since mid-July, as part of a horrific climate crisis and a worrying drought.
