Baby orca dies in New Zealand after fruitless search for mother - Times of India
Wellington: Toa, the orca baby who took hearts after being found wrong in New Zealand waters, lost his fight for survival, conservators confirmed on Saturday.
The killer whale, less than 2.5 meters long and believed to be four to six months old, became new on the front page when it was washed ashore near the capital, Wellington, after separating from its pod two weeks ago.
He was lean, and hundreds of people volunteered to help with the 24-hour care, as he could not survive alone in the ocean.
Ecologists, who called the Orca Toa – Maori for “warrior” – housed him in a makeshift pen in the Plimmerton suburb, where he was fed through a special nipple every four hours, and an air and sea search was set up to find his mother. .
Whale Rescue, an organization that helps Toa care, posted on social media that his condition quickly deteriorated Friday night.
“Veterinarians on the scene rushed to his aid, but could not save him,” the statement said.
Marine Conservation Director Ian Angus said they knew that the longer Toa was in captivity and away from his mother, the more likely his health was to deteriorate.
“Toa passed quickly, surrounded by love with his last days, as comfortable as possible,” Angus said.
“In all this amazing effort, we are all united in wanting to do our best for Toa. Finding and reuniting with his pod was still our goal as we headed to the weekend.
“This calf had taken hearts and no one wanted to believe that there was no chance of a fight.”
Although known as killer whales, orcas are actually the largest species of dolphin, with males growing up to nine meters tall.
Recognizable by their distinctive black and white markings, they are listed as extremely endangered in New Zealand, where their population is estimated at 150-200.
Orcas pods are relatively common in Wellington Harbor, where fish hunting has been observed.
