Antibodies triggered by Chinese Covid-19 shots less effective on Delta variant, says researcher - Times of India
BEIJING: Antibodies caused by two Chinese Covid-19 vaccines are less effective against the Delta variant than other strains, but the shots still offer protection, a Chinese disease control researcher told state media.
The Delta variant of the new Koranovirus, first detected in India, is becoming the world’s leading variant of the disease with its increased transmissibility, the World Health Organization chief scientist warned last week.
In an interview with China Central Television late Thursday, Feng Ziyang, a researcher and former deputy director at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, did not provide further details.
Without naming the two vaccines, Feng said they fall into the category of inactivated vaccines, which contain “killed” coronaviruses that cannot be reproduced in human cells.
Five of the seven domestically developed vaccines in China’s mass vaccination system are inactivated vaccines. These include downloads from Sinovac Biotech and Sinopharm used in countries such as Brazil, Bahrain and Chile.
The Delta variant caused infections in three cities in southern Guangdong province, officials said, reporting a total of 170 locally confirmed patients between May 21 and June 21.
It remains unclear how many of them have been infected with the Delta variant.
About 85% of the cases in the recent Guangdong epidemic were in Guangzhou Province.
“In the Guangdong outbreak, none of these vaccinated infections became serious and none of the serious cases were vaccinated,” Feng said.
