Johannesburg: Six people were killed and 219 arrested amid escalating violence during riots following the imprisonment of former South African President Jacob Zuma, police said on Monday.
Army soldiers will be deployed to help police alleviate the violence, the South African National Defense Force said.
Police said shops and businesses had been looted and vandalized. Traffic has been disrupted by riots blocking major roads with burning tires and trucks, while cars have been attacked.
The violence erupted last week when Zuma began serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court. He had violated a court order to file before a state investigation investigating allegations of corruption during his term from 2009 to 2018.
The country’s Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, will hear Zuma’s appeal against the sentence on Monday.
The riot by Zuma supporters began in his hometown of KwaZulu-Natal last week and spread over the weekend to Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
The deaths – four in Gauteng and two in KwaZulu-Natal – appear to have caused chaos and police are investigating, said Police Colonel Brenda Marindili. Police and national security forces have expanded their presence in both provinces to help eliminate violence, the statement said. The extent of the damage to real estate and businesses will be determined at a later stage, police said.
Police have warned that anyone who uses social media to encourage riots could be arrested and prosecuted.
