Chicago: Two adults and a child were killed after a Metra train hit their vehicle in Chicago on Sunday, officials said.
A train heading north toward the city struck a vehicle shortly after 5pm on the city’s Far South Side and pushed it half a mile before reaching a full stop, Chicago officials told the Chicago Sun-Times.
The force of the collision partially caused the front car to derail and the vehicle caught fire, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.
Two adults and a child who were driving in the vehicle were declared dead at the scene, according to fire officials. A 43-year-old man, also in the vehicle, was taken to hospital in good condition.
The pipeline and train engineer also reported injuries, although they are believed to be life-threatening, Reile said. He said 41 passengers on the train refused medical attention and were taken to a different station so they could continue on their way to the city.
It was not immediately clear how fast the train was traveling at the time of the collision, although Reile said the speed limit for trains in the area was 79 mph.
“Our understanding at this point was that everything was working as it should,” Reile said. “However, we will do – and this is the normal operating procedure whenever there is an incident involving a train whether it is fatal or not – we take shots and check the equipment to make sure it was working properly at the time. But we have no information about that. present to show that our signals and gates were not working. ”
No other information was immediately available. An investigation by Metra officials continues.
